Uwe Sasse was born and raised in Hamburg, Germany.

He started his entrepreneurial career in 1989 in the sports marketing and sport fashion industry, building several successful companies and brands focussed on products, events and services for young target markets in Europe.

Having felt too old for the youth market at age 40, he decided to turn to projects geared towards his own age group.  Being a sailing aficionado, his eyes turned to the America’s Cup. He founded, co-owned and for the first year managed the first ever German America’s Cup team, a challenger in the 32nd America’s Cup.

The birth of his son Nils in October 2005, and unforeseen events affecting the management of the America’s Cup challenger, were followed by his withdrawal from the America’s Cup and made him change his views of life towards more sustainable goals.

As a founding partner of Carbon Challenge, his role as member of the Supervisory Board is to support the management in implementing Carbon Challenge’s ambitious goals and to promote the Carbon Challenge platform to corporate partners worldwide.

“19.4 tons is too high. But there is plenty of opportunity to bring down my footprint without compromising too much on job performance or family life.  My flight volume is contributing the most to my high emission result. We have started using web-based video conferencing tools in January, which has saved me at least two return flights from Valencia to Frankfurt and to London already.  On a personal level, we will now equip our rented home in Valencia with some renewable energy devices, mainly photovoltaic panels. Will also look into small wind turbines, since we have the seabreeze every day in summer.  The big car is gone already, I am back to a car size last used during my time as a student in Hamburg - 25 years ago. And we have stopped buying any food that is flown in, but can still improve the "local food/seasonal food"  share of our grocery bill. Actually makes us feel good to consume local food - gives you a kind of relationship to the area you live in.”
