Tom Weaver’s long history in the international world of high performance sailing goes back to the 1980’s where he built several champion boats, including the Whitbread Maxis, Rothmans and NCB Ireland, and three-time ¾ ton world champion, “Lone”. In the early 90’s Tom moved to the water and his appearances as either crew or boat captain saw him become part of winning campaigns in both the 1992 Commodores Cup and 1994 Kenwood Cup. Tom has since raced in a variety of positions with stints on the 2004 IMS World Champion and as part of the 2004 Swedish Match Tour. More recently he has been active as a navigator, trimmer, helmsman or coach. To date he has won three world championships as a sailor and has coached one world champion winning team. From 1995–99, Tom Weaver worked as Project Manager at Farr International Ltd., managing construction and planning campaigns including King Harald of Norway’s ILC 40ft campaign, several Whitbread 60 boats, as well as starters in Admirals Cup and Kenwood Cup. In 2000–2001 he was a crewmember of the “maxi-cat” Playstation, taking part in the Transatlantic record attempts as well as the around the world non-stop adventure known as “The Race”. As Team Manager of the Mascalzone Latino Challenge in the 31st and 32nd America’s Cup (from 2001– 06), Tom was responsible for a team of ninety. He assumed the role of Technical Director, coordinating the design and construction of the yachts. Today he is a managing partner in Weaver-Price, a design and construction company specialising in high performance sail and power boats. Tom will use his combined skills of setting up leading technical platforms for sailing projects and effective management of sailing teams to build a reliable, safe and successful VOR campaign for Carbon Challenge. “I live a peaceful, environmentally healthy life, I walk to work, shop locally, grow my own vegetables, catch my own fish….but then due to the nature of the global sailing business I fly a lot, this puts me squarely in the category of the worst offenders, I was shocked….My mission is to combine business trips and fly less, use video conferencing more and convince people to take the Carbon challenge.” |
